CONFIGURE KPPP ON LINUX FOR INTERNET CONNECTION THROUGH MOBILE PHONE NEW!

  


In this howto we will see how quickly set up KPPP to connect Linux to Internet through the phone (or similar device as a modem on usb-key).
Obviously, we hope that the necessary hardware (mobile phone or other device) is already connected and works good on your computer.
If not, before going forward in reading this page, we recommend you follow our howto

However, if the hardware is OK, we can proceed further and focus on KPPP.

 1.Open KPPP e click on Configure:

 





2.In the Account Section click on New:





3.Will open a dialog box that asks you if you want to use the wizard or if you want to run the Setup Manual.
The wizard is very good if you use a 56k standard modem, but not for our purpose.

So, as you should deduced, click on Manual Setup:





4.In the
Dial Section of the new window, enter a name for the connection you are creating in Connection name.

TIP: insert a name for easly identify the connection!

Once this is done, you have to add the phone number for the connection by clicking on Add... :

 






5.This will open a small window with the words Enter a phone number.

WARNING: The number to enter is not the phone number of calling card wich you use to connect!
The required number is specific for GPRS/UMTS-connections and may change depending on the mobile phone you want to use.

In the list below there are the main numbers used, grouped by phone brand:

ERICSON:
*99***9#

LG:
*99***1#

MOTOROLA:
*99#

NOKIA:
*99#

PANASONIC:
*99***1#

SAMSUNG:
*99***1#  or *99**1*1#

SHARP:
*99***1#

SIEMENS:
*99***1#

Other mobile phones:
*99#

Other available numbers:
*99*0*1*1#, *99**1*1#, *99***1#, *98#, *98#1, *98*1.

Obviously, to be more certain, we suggest you to contact the customer care of your provider / telephone operator.

Enter the appropriate number and click on OK:





6.In IP Section, must be selected Dynamic IP address :






7.In Gateway Section must be selected Default gateway and "checked" Assign the default route to this gateway:





8.In DNS Section must be selected Manual:

Enter, one by one, the IP addresses for Primary and Secondary DNS  in DNS IP address, then click on Add.

The
Primary and Secondary DNS may be requested at Customer care of your Provider / telephone operator.

TIP: You can use, alternatively, free DNS such as OpenDNS (
www.opendns.com):

Primary DNS : 208.67.222.222

Secondary DNS : 208.67.222.220






9.In Login Script Section, do not to change nothing:






10.In Execute Section, do not to change nothing:





11.In Accounting Section do not to change nothing but you must click on OK for saving all settings included:

WARNING: If you close without click on OK you'll have to start over!






12. After you click OK, you will be back in the main window of KPPP.

Click again on Configure:
 





13.In Modems Section click on New:






14.Will open a new window with two sections: Device and Modem.
In Device Section enter the name of your mobile phone / device.

Tip: If the Device is a mobile phone, enter the model name (if you add others mobile phones in the future, you will can recognize it).

Check that the items indicated by blue arrows in the figure below are the same for your configuration, otherwise edit them.

Now, click on pulldown menu of Modem device:







15.Choose the device you want to use.

If you want to use a USB cable you have to choose:

/dev/ttyACM0 or /dev/ttyUSB0

TIP: For greater certainty, after connected your mobile phone / device, you can open the shell terminal and type:

ls /dev/ttyACM0 (and click ENTER)

Then, the same for other option:

ls /dev/ttyUSB0 (and click ENTER)

If the device is available, the terminal show a word highlighted:

/dev/ttyACM0 or /dev/ttyUSB0

Otherwise, a message will warn you that is not found any file with that name:
...
No such file or directory

Alternatively, if you have followed our howto

now, you can choose
Bluetooth device /dev/rfcomm0 as shown below.

However, now we can select the appropriate device from the pulldown menu:







16.In the Modem Section click on Modem Commands:





17.A new window will open where you should enter the initialization string specific for connecting to your Provider / telephone operator:

In Initialization string 1
must be wrote  ATZ0.

Then, in No carrier response
must be wrote NO CARRIER.

Finally, in Initialization string 2 enter the string below (Only for Italy!):

If you use Wind:
AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet.wind";

If you use TIM: AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","ibox.tim.it",,0,0;  or  AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","uni.tim.it","0.0.0.0";

If you use VODAFONE:   AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","web.omnitel.it","0.0.0.0";

If you use TRE: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","naviga.tre.it";

For others Countries, we recommend you to contact the customer care of your Provider /  Phone operator.

Once inserted the appropriate string, click on OK.






18.Once you click on OK, you will see again the window Devide/Modem: you must click on OK.

WARNING: If you close without clicking OK, you'll have to start over!





19. Last step: You are one time again in front of the main window of KPPP.

From the pulldown menu, indicated by blue arrowes, choose Connection and Modem newly created.

WORNING: Enter an empty space with the space bar in Login ID and in Password:
If not, when you connect, KPPP could request them.


Finally, if everything went as expected, you can connect by clicking on Connect:





TIP: If you can not browse, maybe 
you have made some mistakes:try again to follow the various steps.
