INTERNET CONNECTION ON LINUX WITH MOBILE PHONE AND BLUETOOTH

This guide was created with the purpose to resolve one of most important issues for neophytes of the Linux community : Connecting to the internet trough mobile phone and bluetooth.
I also tried to explain the meaning of the various steps, because I have observed that most of the howtos that it's possible to find on the web, show the operations to be done but not their meaning and the consequential effects on the system.
The following operations have been tested on Fedora, but should work for most Linux distributions.

And now, Good Job!

Procedure:

1.Connect the Bluetooth adapter to your computer (where it is not integrated into the pc of course ...);

   If you are lucky, your distribution is fairly advanced and will automatically recognize the presence of the adapter.
   Otherwise, you need to download the software package Bluez which is specific for managing the Bluetooth services.
   If you do not know how to do it, you can follow our howto on

<< BLUETOOTH ON LINUX WITH BLUEZ >>

2.Open the Shell Console:

3.Verify that the adapter has been recognized by the system:

To do this we can use the command hcitool dev (specific to configure Bluetooth connections and send special command to Bluetooth devices):

4.Activate the Bluetooth visibility of the mobile device:
   You must try the procedure in the manual of your mobile device in the Section of Connections Management ;

5. Search a mobile Bluetooth device to use it as a modem:
   To do this we use the command
hcitool scan:

    and the output will look something like this:

  were 00:12:56:A0:01:CC is the mac (unique identifying number) of the device (which will be similar to this in form but not identical!).

  Of course, if you have more than one device, you can recognize the device that you want to use by the name next to the mac;

6. Finding the channel of Dial-up Service which your mobile device and your computer use to communicate:

To do this, after having obtained administrator privileges, we can use the sdptool command (sdptool creates the interface to perform queries to the bluetooth devices):

     in this case, is used the channel 3, but this is not always sure, so be careful;

7.Configuration of
rfcomm.conf file (/etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf):

After making sure that you have Administrator privileges, open the file with a text editor (for this example we'll use gedit):

  pressing the Enter key will open the editor, then you will have to enter the data as in the following image.

  WARNING: Remember to replace the data of device and channel with those of your mobile device (mac and channel that you found before):

  then, save and quit.

8. Restart the
Bluetooth service with the command  /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart:

   Or, alternatively you can Restart the Computer;

9.
If you have already configured kppp to connect, just change the voice Modem Device using dev/rfcomm0 and start your connection.

Otherwise you can follow our howto

   << CONFIGURE KPPP ON LINUX FOR INTERNET CONNECTION THROUGH MOBILE PHONE >>

 Conclusions

I hope I have done something pleasing to the free software community and that this howto will be useful.
